Lift Safety Tips: Simple Ways to Ensure Safety
Lifts are surprisingly safe, thanks to years of innovation and technological improvements. Today’s lifts are highly developed and designed to prevent accidents or injuries. As with anything, however, you do need to take care to prevent possible issues.
Lift Your Feet Stepping In
It’s important to step higher as you enter the lift. There’s often a slight difference between the floor and the lift floor. This may occur when the lift is slightly offset from the floor, but if it’s more than a few centimetres, you should call for maintenance to ensure the alignment doesn’t get worse.
Move Away from the Doors
Once you are inside the lift, step back from the doors and make sure anyone with you does the same. It’s quite easy for things to get caught in the doors. While there are sensors to prevent items such as arms and legs from getting caught, a thin piece of clothing may not trigger the sensors. It’s best to stand back to avoid possible injury.
Use the ‘Door Open’ Button
Waiting for someone to reach you? Press and hold the ‘door open’ button to hold the elevator for them. This is the purpose of the button, aside from opening the door when it doesn’t do it automatically. It’s best to use the button rather than put your arm out. If you’re the one racing to the lift, ask someone inside to hold the button.
Keep the Order
There’s no room for disorder in a tiny lift, so it’s essential that manners are used and the people in front step out first. When you step into a lift, move to the back if possible and make way for anyone who is planning to get out on a floor before yours.
Don’t Stop Closing Doors
You should avoid using your arm, bag, or foot to stop the doors from closing. There are sensors, as mentioned above, but it’s best to avoid the risk. Simply use the ‘door open’ button to prevent any possible issues.
Don’t Allow Children to Play with the Buttons
Children love buttons and the lift is full of them. This can be a big problem as it can overload the lift and cause you to stop on every level. To prevent this type of behaviour, which can be quite rude, let the child press one button, then move them away from the panel. This will prevent unwanted button-pushing.
Lifts are very safe if you stick to the guidelines and use them as intended. Be polite and avoid pushing or getting things caught in the doors. With the above tips, you’re ready to ride the lift safely.
