The 5 Scariest Lifts In The World
For some of us, being suspended hundreds of feet in the air is the stuff of nightmares. However, others relish at the chance to experience an unforgettable adrenaline rush coupled with stunning views.
Here’s just a few of the scariest lifts in the world.
The Hammetschwand Lift, Switzerland
The Hammetschwand Lift, in Switzerland, is the highest exterior elevator in Europe. The 152.8 metre-high lift offers picturesque views of Hammetschwand and Lake Lucerne "Kreuztrichter", and will carry visitors to the top in under a minute.
Sky Tower, New Zealand
The iconic Sky Tower dominates Auckland’s skyline, making it a focal point of the city. Its elevator, standing at 610 feet high, can take you to the top in just 40 thrilling seconds. With a terrifying glass floor, looking down during the ascent can feel like falling into an abyss. If you brave the lift, however, you’ll be able to experience incredible 360° views of Tāmaki Makaurau.
The Bailong Elevator, China
The Bailong Elevator is the highest outdoor elevator in the world. Stretched along stone pillars that inspired the floating mountains in the film ‘Avatar’, this speedy gateway offers intoxicating views of the surrounding mountains and forest. It consists of three double-decker glass lifts, each of which can transport as many as 46 visitors up the mountain - shockingly, the cars make the ascent in just one minute and 32 seconds.
Taipei 101, Taiwan
Taipei 101 is a supertall skyscraper in Taiwan - in fact, the 10th tallest in the world. The building stands at 1667 feet tall and consists of 101 floors. It offers both indoor and outdoor observation decks that boast stunning panoramic views. Taipei 101 includes two high-speed single deck elevators, manufactured by Toshiba, which are thought to be some of the fastest in the world - you can reach the top levels from the bottom in 30 seconds.
Andrew Walker’s Bottomless Elevator Illusion, London
This promotional piece, installed in an elevator at the Southside Wandsworth Shopping Centre in London’s Wandsworth Town, featured the terrifying illusion of a gaping hole taking up most of the elevator floor and depicted the empty shaft below. This clever optical trick gave shoppers the fright of their lives, with people mistakenly believing the floor of the elevator had collapsed.
