For many people, being stuck in a lift is an all to real fear. However, in reality, the chances of this occurring and very slim and with alarm systems built into the lift if you do get stuck then help will be with you shortly.

Here’s all you need to know about the emergency alarm button in the lift.

What does the alarm do?

All lifts are fitted with an emergency alarm. In case of an emergency such as a lift breakdown, sounding the alarm will alert maintenance staff or trained professionals in the service centre that you are in need of help. Pressing the alarm will also allow you to speak to the person on the other end so you can explain your situation.

When should you press the alarm?

You should press the alarm when you are in need of urgent help such as when the lift’s doors will not open or you’re stuck in one place. The call button or emergency button will usually be marked by the image of a yellow bell or phone although this can vary. Holding this button down will connect you with an operator who will be on hand to help.

Who is on the other end of the alarm?

In most cases, when the emergency alarm is activated somebody will speak on the other end to ask if you need help - this will be someone from maintenance. If you do need help then the operator will ask what’s wrong, details of your location and possibly a unique code that can be found within the lift. Their job is to help you resolve the situation including sending a trained technician to the lift who can get you out safely.

How to stay calm when stuck in a lift

Try not to panic as this will delay the problem further.

Try to open the doors using the appropriate buttons. If this does not work then press the emergency button.

Don’t jump up and down or try to prise the doors open in an attempt to restart the lift!
