Four Misconceptions Surrounding Elevators
It might come as a surprise, but there are a lot of myths surrounding elevators. In fact, these myths can be so detrimental that people are actually fearful of stepping into an elevator. Perhaps one of the main things driving these myths are action movies, I mean you only have to watch Terminator 2 or Spiderman to develop a fear of lifts! But, we all know that movies are exaggerated and in reality, elevator companies ensure that their lifts are as safe as possible. Keeping the elevator safe is dependent on the elevator manufacturer, the building opener and those who are riding the elevator.
Here are just four common misconceptions surrounding elevators!
Lifts Depend on One Rope
Perhaps one of the most common misconceptions regarding elevators is that they are held up by a singular rope that could break at any second. This is not the case, as elevators are actually held up by multiple steel cables. Even if any of the ropes are on the verge of snapping, extra safety features are in place to stop the elevator.
Overcrowded Elevator Equals Danger
The common myth here is that if an elevator is too heavy, then it will just completely fall. But actually, the lift just won’t move at all. The elevator will instead wait until enough people get off the elevator so the weight is reduced.
Escaping through the Safety Hatch
These hatches are specifically designed for rescue purposes, but did you know that they can only be opened from the outside? You might have seen it in films where the protagonist finds a nifty way of escaping through the hatch. Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but this isn’t possible! You should never try to get out of an elevator yourself by tampering with the hatch or the safety do. If you do find yourself stuck, then you should press the alarm and calmly wait for the rescue service.
Making the Elevator Arrive Quicker
You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t push the elevator button at least ten times trying to get the elevator to arrive quicker. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Lifts are designed so that when the button is pressed, the software determines the exact route. Although you might think you’re making it arrive quicker, it’s still responding to your first push of the button.
