Lift Safety: Do’s and Don'ts
Hundreds of people use lifts every day. Nevertheless, there are many factors that can make riding a lift dangerous. Knowing how to safely use a lift is essential for your own safety and to avoid accidents.
With that in mind, here is our lift do’s and don’ts list to avoid endangering yourself and other passengers.
●It’s helpful to be aware of what floor you are visiting prior to you getting into the lift.
●If the lift is going in a wrong or different direction, you will be able to use a floor button and can stay in the elevator until it reaches your destination and can proceed to your floor.
●Be mindful entering the lift if you use a walking device or mobility aid to prevent trips or bumping into anything.
●Be mindful when entering and exiting the lift - this is so you don’t trip or fall over which can be surprisingly common when leaving a lift. This is because a lift can stop slightly below or above the floor level.
●Try and be courteous when exiting and entering the lift to make sure no one is pushed or injured due to your extreme foot traffic.
●Don’t use a lift if a fire alarm has gone off - be sure that you always use the stairs which lead to a safe fire exit and then a designated fire safety point.
●Don’t spend your lift journey stood too close to the doors of the lift if it’s empty, this is to allow other passengers to board easily.
●Don’t force your way into a crowded lift. Instead, wait for the next lift as if you are struggling to get in, the lift is probably at its maximum capacity.
●Don’t under any circumstances mess around with the controls or push and shove anyone in the lift for their and your own safety. As well as this, refrain from making excessive noise or smoking in a lift.
●Don’t lean on the doors, this could cause you to fall over unexpectedly or push anyone into the doors.
Lift safety is about being sensible and courteous. You need to use your common sense and be aware of your surroundings in order to ensure everyone is safe and comfortable.
