It goes without saying that lifts have had a massive impact on the building industry and the world of architecture. With this in mind, here we have collated some of our favourite facts about lifts which may change how you view them forever!

The first buildings to feature lifts were hotels

The first-ever buildings to have lifts in them were big, contemporary hotels in locations such as New York, London and Paris which had huge amounts of visitors. The first hotel to have a lift installed was in New York in 1859, and was created specifically to incorporate a lift. It was seen as a decadent luxury that stopped guests from having to use the stairs.

The world's tallest lift reaches heights of 500m

The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa located in Dubai. The lift inside this building goes as high as its 163rd story and covers a distance of 504 metres, this is the highest that a lift can take anyone.

You had to train for three years to operate a lift in Germany

In Germany, young boys would need to study for up to three years in order to become a lift operator In the early days of the lift. The job of an elevator operator was seen as a highly-skilled and rather intricate job.

Lifts used to be referred to as rising rooms

The Langham Hotel in London opened in 1865 and was thought to be Europe’s leading luxury hotel. It is believed to be the first London hotel to feature hydraulic lifts. Nevertheless, at the time they were actually referred to as “rising rooms.”

Mirrors are strategically placed in a lift

Mirrors are pretty standard in lifts and the reason for this is that they are believed to keep passengers occupied throughout a journey. This was due to the fact that people would complain if the lift was going to slow or if the person using the lift was anxious about doing so, they also calmed those with claustrophobia.
